YEAR 2009 - UAE

Mr. Jamal Ahmed Al Jassmi

This contribution to “HR Community” award recognizes Mr. Jamal Al Jassmi’s  contribution to the HR Community.

Jamal Al Jassmi is a Director General Of Emirates Institute for Banking & Financial Studies.

He is a public administrator by profession with over two decades of commendable service in Human Resources Development. He holds a Masters in Public Administration from University of Liverpool, UK.

Under his able leadership, the Institute is scaling great heights in professional education and research in the service of country’s financial sector. His major areas of responsibility includes besides building trained professional cadre in banks, achieving  the national mission of Emiratisation through creative and proactive collaboration with the financial sector in UAE. He is member secretary of HRD / Emiratisation Committee in the Banking and Financial Sector, besides being member in several other committees of national and international importance  including Higher committee for HRD in Insurance sector, Quality award committee of  Government of Dubai etc.

He has widely traveled around the globe and has presented papers in International conferences on HRD issues with special focus on emerging economies. He has several completed research projects to his credit besides publications on the subject.

He continuously encourages positive change and is always ready to accept new challenges at any time.

YEAR 2009 - SAUDI ARABIA

Sheikh Dr. Ahmed A. Taweel

This contribution to “HR Community” award recognizes Dr. Ahmed Al Taweel’s contribution to the HR Community.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Taweel is a visionary from a family of real estate investors. In 1422h he controversially chose to invest in the education and training industry. Although fellow investors were incredulous at the beginning, Dr. Ahmed Al-Taweel was able to convince key people to invest in the Alfaisal International Academy.

The Alfaisal International Academy was profitable from the start. It became the main pillar of the Arabian Education and Training Group from which many other endeavors have stemmed. Its growth in stature was fuelled by contagious passion of the founder himself.

Dr. Al-Taweel’s vision to make education accessible to all, formed the basis of his outreach initiatives to society. Long before corporate social responsibility became a buzzword, Dr. Al-Taweel re-invested the profits made into establishing an Academic Center for Students and an Academic Center for Girls.

Several other noble initiatives underline Dr. Ahmed Al-Taweel’s contribution to  the community. He single handedly garnered numerous educational agreements and accreditations with notable universities and educational centers in and outside of the Kingdom. These affiliations led to an illustrious number of trainees and graduates completing their studies in various fields of specialisations.

YEAR 2009 - PAKISTAN

Mr. Syed Zulfiqar Ali

This contribution to the “HR Community” award recognizes Zulfiqar Ali’s contribution to the HR Community and its development.

GEO TV Network is part of the largest media conglomerate of Pakistan the “Jang Group”. Established in 2002 with an ambitious vision and recognition of human resources as the foundation of GEO’s success.

Building a team to achieve the vision was critical. CEO of GEO TV Network selected Mr. Zulfiqar Ali to accompany him on this endeavor as Head of HR.
 
Zulfiqar has been instrumental in conceiving, developing and implementing initiatives like working philosophy of “Khudi” (empowerment), corporate values “GEO Iqdar”, Culture of Success “Sar Utha Kay GEO”, “Client Service Model” of HR, Organisational Design and Employee Engagement Strategy.

These initiatives passed the toughest test in 2007, Government ban GEO TV but HR team successfully kept TeamGEO motivated and united during 79 days of curb.

This “Contribution to HR Community” Award recognises Mr. Ravishanker’s contribution in areas of Human Capital Development.

Ravi as he is called by his friends & the fraternity is currently the Group Head of HR as Senior Vice President, The India Cements Ltd., Chennai, India – Largest producer of cement in South India and owners of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Team. A post graduate in personnel & business management and with over 30 years of experience, Ravi is regarded as a HR veteran and is one of the well respected names in HR circles across the country.

Ravi, started his career with a British Company viz. Mettur Beardsell Ltd as a trainee. He in the mid 80’s joined India cements as Personnel officer and moved up to head HR of Cement, Sugar, Shipping , Information Technology and Power businesses of the group.

Ravi’s foresight and business acumen helped him to device innovative approaches to manage cultural integration during mergers, acquisitions , hiving off and green field expansions. Ravi with his unique approach did pioneering work on improving people productivity by a combination of initiatives which include innovative VRS, rational job combinations, up skilling for technology progression etc., All this he did with finesse – which is evident that the company’s employee attrition is one of the least in the industry and the tones of cement per person is one of the best. Ravi is a key contributor and facilitator for national level settlement of wages for cement industries in India since 1992 covering nearly 3 lakhs employees.  

Ravi is an active contributor to the HR fraternity. He has held various positions in National Inst of Personnel Management (NIPM) and during his tenure, Exchange Programme of HR Professionals between India and Srilanka materialized.  He has also held various positions in Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), All India Organization of Employers(AIOE) and Employers Federation of Southern India (EFSI).  Ravi has traveled widely across the globe, presented papers in several national and international seminars. He had represented International Labour Organization (ILO) regarding various initiatives in India and abroad.

Ravi lives in Chennai and frequents Brisbane, Australia as his wife Alli and two sons live there.

Coming from a background of artistic education, she constantly looks for ways that can combine her learning background with the day-to-day entrepreneurial activities. Her objective is to merge her creative side with the family legacy of retailing and distributing quality products that has been in Bahrain for over six decades.

Aspire to add great value to the community, and to genuinely step beyond the retail business and open up more communication channels for the community.

 Merging the artistic and the creativity along with the commercial is what she hopes to achieve. Ultimately aspires to be a business model that is not only about the commercial but also about the ethical and aesthetic aspect.

This contribution to the “HR Community” award recognizes Yasser Al Salman’s contribution to the HR Community and its development.

A result oriented Senior HR professional with around a decade of experience in Human Resource Strategy, Human Resource Management, Talent Management, Organizational Development, and General Administration. Currently he is heading the HR department in a leading Reinsurance Organization in the Middle East and North Africa region. Previously he worked with Zain Mobile Telecommunication Company, which is the 3rd biggest telecom operator in the Arab world, and he was heading the training and development function.

Yasser Al Salman is the author of the book: The Dynamics of Human Resources: A Journey into the Noble Practice of Managing Human Capital, which was published by I universe, USA, on the 14th of September 2009. He has also delivered various presentations and training programs locally and abroad"

Ms Hamidah Naziadin

This “Contribution to HR Community” Award recognises Ms Hamidah Naziadin’s contribution in areas of Human Capital Development.

Ms Hamidah Naziadin, the Head of Corporate Resources for CIMB Group, is a lawyer by training. Yet, she has demonstrated a passion for people development by playing a key role as a change agent by personally reaching out to the employees. With the integration of the then Bumiputra Commerce Bank into the
Group and the merger with Southern Bank, her responsibilities were expanded from 1,000 employees to 16,000 employees.

As the Group expands its region, her scope of work extended to cover Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Thailand with a total group headcount of 35,000.

She has been a proactive change agent through the implementation of several strategic human capital initiatives. These included The Complete Banker Programme which recruits fresh graduates and grooms them to take on bigger roles in the Group and the Talent Management Framework to identify and develop the talent pipeline to support the growth of the organisation.

Ms Hamidah also held the position as President of the Malayan Commercial Banks’ Association (MCBA) for 2 consecutive terms and negotiated with the in-house union to agree to a performance based bonus to replace the guaranteed bonus practice. She has proudly led the team to win the Malaysia HR Awards twice in 2002/2003 and 2008/2009.

Ahmad A. Aziz Al Khayat

This “Contribution to HR Community” Award recognises Mr. Ahmad A. Aziz Al Khayat’s contribution to human capital development in the Ministry of Works, Kingdom of Bahrain.

Mr. Ahmad Aziz Al Khayat was appointed in August 2002 as Director of Human Resources in the Ministry of Works (MOW), Kingdom of Bahrain. He has moved on from his role as pure implementer of Civil Service Bureau’s rules and regulations into a human capital developer working to change MOW into a leading professional organisation.

His enormous achievement is in implementing the Management Development Planning Study. He has contributed to its successful implementation and its continuous roll-out and improvements covering Strategic Review – Diagnostic and Analysis of MOW, Organisational Manual, Business Architecture, Analysis of Human Resources Requirements, HR Policy and Procedures, Performance Appraisal System, IT Goals & Strategies, Project Management, and Project Cycle and Work Procedures.

Ms Siti Aishah Md Lassim

This “Contribution to HR Community” Award recognises Ms. Siti Aishah Md Lassim’s contribution to the HR community.

Ms Siti was the Executive Vice President and Head of Maybank Group. She was also the Vice President and Head of Performance Management before taking up her present position. As a HR professional, she has contributed to developing HR systems for Malaysia’s largest bank, Maybank and the Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad (Malaysia Securities Exchange).

Siti headed the Human Resource of about 24,000 employees of the Maybank Group in the ASEAN region and in China where she worked with the Group CEO to develop and execute the Human Capital Agenda of the Maybank Group covering Organisational Development, Talent Management, Rewards & Recognition, Industrial and Employee Relations, HR Systems and Shared Services.

Among her recent achievements, Ms Siti Aishah led Maybank to win the Prime Minister’s Best Workplace Practices Award. She also led Maybank to win the Outstanding Malaysia HR Achievement Award, the National Award for Accounting Best Practice (NAFMA) and was a team leader for Performance
Management Section. In addition, she was recently elected as the Chairman of the HR Networking Committee of the Malaysian Banking Institute (IBBM)

Josef Bataona

This “Contribution to HR Community” Award recognises Mr. Josef’s work in Human Resource development since 1980.

Mr. Josef Bataona is the Director of Human Resource & Corporate Relations in Unilever, Indonesia. He joined Unilever Indonesia as a management trainee in 1980 and has since moved up to occupy various positions within the company including a three year stint with Quest International as Regional HR Manager for
Asia Pacific.

He has taken special efforts in coaching and training students on Leadership Development Programmes at CCL Colorado, USA and in San Diego, USA fully recognising that it is the students who form the nucleus of a future society. Mr. Josef Bataona’s work in Unilever and human capital development work in Indonesia earned him the “HR Executive of the Year”. 2008, from the Human Resources Practitioners Group.

Hasnah Ismail

Hasnah Ismail is an accomplished and dedicated HR professional and she passionately believes in doing her best - constantly tapping the talents of individual unique capabilities to maximise business results.

In other words, her driving mottos are To Do the Right Thing and to always perceive greater value in the task performed. Her career role can be best described as a Change Agent and People Developer.

The basic thrust of developing and motivating people stems from the fact that a valuable employee is nothing more than a person who will do what you want done!

With more than 20 years experience in HR (50-50 consulting vs corporate experience), her expertise covers assignments and work scope in a number of major transformation initiatives for the government-linked organisations (GLCs) as well as Privatised government organisations. She has designed, implemented and led projects which inevitably require structure, process and culture interventions.

Hasnah also frequently conducts hands-on facilitation sessions training various levels of employees in the organization. Her current engagement with one of the large GLCs requires her to develop a Leadership Roadmap which incorporates team building, engagement skills, coaching and mentoring and a customised leadership development programme. She is also designing the top talent management and succession planning.

Hasnah's style of leadership has often been described as dynamic and it will not be absolutely correct if the description is not matched with the words, fun, friendly and flexible! These 3Fs aptly describes the new era of HR which is no longer just boring (dry), unfriendly (IR) and rigid (inflexible). Her corporate HR career allows her to complement the strategic consulting experience with the day to day implementation aspects of making change happen. In short, she is known for her engaging style and possesses a deep skills-set in managing change. She is at the same time sensitive and respectful of the Stakeholder's needs all the time.

Hasnah graduated with a BBA degree from Western Michigan University, USA in 1981 and subsequently proceeded to do her post-graduate studies at University of Dayton, Ohio in 1983. She began her career as an Executive at Malayan Banking Berhad, Economic Research Department, a division under the Corporate Planning Division for about 5 years. Her next move led her to acquire and gain greater insights and Experience in HR, working over the years with the renowned Consulting firms. Armed with that experience, she delved back into the corporate scene and proved to herself that Consultants Can and Do Deliver As Well!

Hasnah is blessed with 5 children; 3 teenage daughters and 2 cheeky young boys. Managing a balanced family lifestyle and a progressing career is without doubt a great challenge and as human beings, we seek the blessings of the Almighty for the divine intervention and guidance always.

Mohd Khalis Abdul Rahim

A HR practitioner for nearly two decades, Khalis Rahim is an innovative HR professional; coming in with extensive HR experience from the consulting, disk drive, FMCG and semiconductors industries, he engages unconventional approaches in organisation transformation, talent development and change management efforts.

Today, Khalis has been instrumental in Freescale Malaysia's transformational efforts into becoming a high performance organisation. Starting from his own "backyard", he set out to transform his HR organisation from operational to that of a strategic nature. Khalis innovatively developed the line managers to own the daily non-strategic HR roles by leveraging on technology, processes and systems.

A strong proponent of management development, Khalis relentlessly drives the Management and Supervisory Development Programmes for all managers and line supervisors. These programmes have positively impacted gross margins, quality and the building of a high performance culture.

Khalis energetically champions the Talent Mindset in the organisation through development and implementation of Talent Lifecycle Management, cultivating a talent resource for Freescale and our nation. He believes in building an inclusive workplace where everyone's talents are leveraged on. Roslan Abdul Razak

The Contribution to the HR Community Award recognises Mr. Roslan Abdul for his pioneering efforts in Corporate Culture Transformation that bonds people together. As a Sime Darby Vice-President and Head of Sime Darby Business School, his vision for people development, firm belief, dedication, and drive in creating a strong corporate culture led him to found several key HRD programmes such as Corporate Team Based Culture, Performance Driven Culture, Performance Drive Teams, and Team Building Courses, Leadership Development, Senior Management Development, Young Managers Development, Executive Development, Supervisory Development, and, Staff Development. Since then more than 30,000 people have gone through his training programmes, many of whom are in senior positions in the government and corporate world.

Roslan's began his career in 1974 as a Government Officer with Farmers Organisation Authority. In 1975 he went to Louisiana State University in USA to study Agriculture. He joined NST in 1984 as a Training Manager and later join the Sime Darby Group in June 1989, as Manager - Manpower Planning and Development.

In 1992 Roslan initiated the development of Sime Darby Human Resource Development Centre only to rebrand it to the Sime Darby Business School in June 2006. Roslan Razak is known as the teambuilder/trainer a coach, mentor, a friend and an inspiration to all who comes in contact with him. He is the man with a STORI that glues organisations together. STORI, it is the acronym for Sincerity, Trust, Openness, Realisation, and Interdependence, values he inculcated in the employees. The programmes are value based, performance driven, people centered and results focused.

As a HRD blue-blood, Roslan Razak, has contributed to HRD in the Government service, multi national corporations, public listed companies, and small businesses from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Philippines, USA, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, India, Australia, Sweden, Vanuatu, Fiji and Vietnam.

Roslan is currently pursuing collaboration and partnerships with local and international universities for the betterment of our more than 100,000 employees in Sime Darby.
YEAR 2007 - MALAYSIA

Azmin Tan Sri Abdul Aziz

The Contribution to the HR Community Award recognises Azmin's work in human capital development over the last two decades.

This award recognises his contributions to people development in the Automotive and Retail Industry over the last 15 years.

Though schooled in the UK and graduated in the US, Azmin has demonstrated a great understanding of local cultures.

In his pioneering work in the field of training & development, Azmin headed the training department of Malaysia's second car company PERODUA with 2000 direct staff and 800 dealers. His work on developing skills and development programmes had been extremely impactful on the organisation.

Subsequently with globalisation and the opening up of the retail sector in the region, Azmin joined a newly formed retail chain. He started the first Malaysian Retail School which has responsibility for training 10,000 staff in 300 stores nationwide. In the six months of 2007 Azmin has trained with only a small team very much the same number of pepple in the company trained in entire 2006 - nearly ten thousand participants in about 600 over training sessions.
YEAR 2007 - MALAYSIA

Dr. Peter Shephard

The Contribution to the HR Community Award recognises Dr. Peter Shephard for his pioneering efforts as a training professional over the last three decades.

One core value of Peter's, is sharing knowledge and developing others, and he has demonstrated this since joining the scouting movement, the red cross and the cadets in the 50's. It seemed a natural transition from teens to adulthood to join the Training and Development profession. This first started out in 1967, when he became an animal health officer with the New Zealand Government. Later he trained the veterinary sales force of a US multinational drug company. After working with QANTAS, he came to Malaysia to train Job Analysts in MAS.

In the seventies, he formed CREDO, a HR and OD Company. Since then, not a month has gone by when he is not consulting, training, coaching or teaching. He has served with several professional associations and is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars. He is also an author of 5 books. On the academic scene, Peter has two doctoral degrees: A PhD in Intercultural Management and a D. Litt on Personality, Genetics and Learning Styles.

Currently his emphasis is on the profiling of personality and competency potential, including the use of aptitude testing and whole brain learning and thinking. With his interest in culture and diversity, he has been validating several instrument's in which he is also a Certified Master Trainer. So, at an age when many people have long retired, Peter is as active as ever, and when asked about retirement, he said: "Maybe I will think about it in 2020, when I turn 80!"
YEAR 2007 - SINGAPORE

Dr. Goh Ban Eng

The Contribution to the HR Community Award recognises Dr. Goh for her determination to align people development to business results and to continuously strive to develop best practices in HR.

Dr. Goh Ban Eng holds a PhD in Educational Psychology from Purdue University, USA and a Masters degree in Linguistics from the University of Leeds, UK. She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and a life member of Educational Research Association (ERA) Singapore.

She is currently the Senior Manager of HR Development at Singapore Airlines, having held positions as Senior Manager, HR Learning and Management Development Centre, and also Cabin Crew Training. She has also clocked more than 30 years in the Singapore Education service with her job before joining SIA as Assistant Director of the Gifted Education Unit focusing on talent development of children.

In HR, her interest and focus is on organisational talent management and leadership development for business competitiveness. Staff's core competencies are developed to meet challenges in the business environment through a variety of programmes utilizing technology and training facilitators who are leaders in their field. Inhouse facilitators and senior management are also developed and deployed to provide relevant institutional knowledge for building a learning organisation through regular sharing sessions and a commitment to service excellence.
YEAR 2007 - KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN

Mr. Hussain Ismail

The Contribution to the HR Community Award recognises Mr. Hussain Ismail for his work in promoting the cause of learning at the workplace.

Hussain Ismail is a remarkable Bahraini who has contributed significantly to the training and development world not just in Bahrain but also internationally. In Bahrain, he has achieved significant success in the training of Bahrainis in the banking sector.

Hussain, currently the president of Bahrain Society for Human Resources Development and the President of Manama Rotary Club, continues to pioneer innovations and new tools in developing people.

Hussain, besides receiving his MBA in General Management from the University of Durham, U.K. is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, UK.

Hussain was a line manager with several years of experiences in various roles before assuming human resource positions.

Currently the Deputy Director at the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance, his responsibilities include the promotion, development and direction of a planned programme of course offerings in professional education to meet the training and development needs of banks, financial institutions and other major organisations in the Kingdom of Bahrain and GCC.

Ms. Eva Wong

The Contribution to the HR Community Award recognises Ms. Eva Wong for her work in Coaching that has impacted the HR profession positively.

Ms. Eva Wong has been a great influence in the development of people in China. This award recognises her contributions to people development in the Coaching field in China and greater Asia.

Ms. Eva Wong completed post graduate studies in the Leadership Programme for Educators at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Masters in Counselling from the University of New England, Australia.

She contributed in an exceptional way with the publication of her book on the REN Coaching Model©, The Power of REN, China's Coaching Phenomenon. This was her first English book published with Wiley & Sons.

Her significant achievements include being appointed to the committee of the Devoted Chinese Patriots Organisation and being awarded the 2006 award for the top 10 most influential people for their contribution to a harmonious society in China. Besides being elected as one of China's 100 Outstanding Women Entrepreneurs by the China Women's Federation and China Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs, she was awarded the President's Award by the International Coach Federation.

YEAR 2006 - MALAYSIA

Dr. Kamal Khir is currently the Director Institute of Bankers Malaysia (Institut Bank-Bank Malaysia), a Professional Institute for the Banking and Financial Services in Malaysia. He is also the CEO of Malaysia Banking Academy, an Institute of Higher Learning.

He has over 20 years of experience in the field of Human Resource Development having held positions such as the Head of Sime Darby Human Resource Development Centre, Group Manager-Training & Development, Sime Darby Group, and managerial positions in PLUS, Grundig, and The New Straits Times Group. He was also engaged as a consultant/facilitator for the Prime Minister's Department National Civic Bureau and Ministry of Agriculture. He was also instrumental in setting up the Sime Darby HRD Centre in 1993.

Dr. Kamal is a Master Trainer certification in Interaction Management Techniques, Service Plus/Customer Service, Skills for Empowered Workforce, Strategy Programme and Targeted Selection. He is also a qualified Internal Quality Auditor and Lead Assessor by Llyods and Portsmouth University, UK.

At national level, he is a member of the Committee for Standard & Certification, National Vocational Training Council (MLVK), Ministry of Human Resources, Chairman of Skill Development Committee for Business Management, MLVK, Ministry of Human Resources and Chairman of Skill Development Committee for Banking, MLVK, Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia.

At international level, he a member of the Education Committee of the Asean Banking Association and Vice President, Training & Development, HRD Gateway.

Dr. Kamal's valuable contributions to the National Consultative Panel (NCP) On Human Resource Development, Malaysian Institute for Human Resource Management (MIHRM), Malaysian Society for Training and Development (MSTD) are huge. As for corporation, he has contributed towards human resource development especially at Sime Darby Human Resources Development Centre. With his current challenging position as Director of Institute of Bankers Malaysia and CEO, Malaysia Banking Academy will see even more contributions towards the organization.
