THE ASIA HRD CONGRESS™ AWARDS - 2003


The Asia HRD Congress™ Awards 2003 recognizes significant contributions to people development in two categories. These awards were presented by Tan Sri Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad of the New Straits Times Press.

1) Awards for Helping People Learn and Perform

YBhg Datuk Yau De Piyau has made a significant contribution to the development of the Human Resources sector in Malaysia. Datuk Yau holds a Masters' degree from United Kingdom in manpower studies and served in the Ministry of Human Resources for more than two decades.

Among his many achievements, Datuk Yau has succeeded in promoting and establishing recognition for the importance of developing people.

Popularly known the 'one percent man', he spearheaded the idea of organizations contributing funding human resources development in the country. Datuk Yau and his team nurtured the training industry and created a corporate learning culture in the country.

En. Ishak bin Hashim holds a Master of Arts Degree in Education from Stanford, USA. He has worked with many corporations in various capacities including that of Director of HR and Corporate Affairs with Boustead Holdings Berhad and General Manager of Corporate Services with Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad.

Since 2001, En. Ishak is the Executive Vice President of Corporate Services with Affin Bank Berhad. As a practitioner of HR, he is also affiliated to Malaysian Institute of Human Resource Management and is serving in the capacity as Chairman of the Court of Fellows. He also served as President of the institute. He was also a Council Member the Malaysian Association of Productivity.

En. Ishak is renowned for his passion in developing people. His initiatives has proved beyond doubt that Human Resources Development can contribute to an organization's competitive edge.

Mr. Jeremy Spoor first came to Malaysia in 1989 and committed the last 15 years to developing the Malaysian workforce. Mr. Spoor was formerly the Head of Technology of Slough College before coming to Malaysia to serve as Chairman and President of Specialist Management Resources. For the last 3 years he has been Director of Training for Sam Ling Corporation, Sarawak. He has contributed greatly, both as a speaker and organizer, to the last 13 Trainers meet Trainers Conferences. Mr. Spoor's passion for training is unparalleled and the HRD Congress and Trainers Meet Trainers alumni recognize his contributions in the field of people development.

YBhg Datuk Dr. Syed Othman Alhabshi has Bachelor of Economics and Statistics degree from University of Malaya; Master of Science in Statistics from University of Winsconsin, USA; and Ph.D. in Econometrics from University of Birmingham, UK. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics both at University Kebangsaan Malaysia and International Islamic University and the Deputy-Vice Chancellor (Academic) at University Utara Malaysia. He was also Associate Professor at University Kebangsaan Malaysia and Professor of Economics of International Islamic University Malaysia.

An educator whose contribution is invaluable, his efforts continue in his leadership to Malaysia's first virtual University, that would offer unparalleled educational opportunities to Malaysians.

2) Special Recognition Award
Mr. Sam A. Abishegam, is an illustrious personality in Malaysia's Human Resources Development scene.

He was the first Director General of the National Productivity Council, the first Human Resources Director of Dunlop, Malaysia, and Director of Human Resources of Radio Corporation of America. He is also the founding member and president of the Malaysian Human Resources Management. For more than two decades, he worked with the Malaysian Institute of Management. At the height of his career, Mr. Abishegam was Malaysia's leading trainer. He is known as Malaysia's pioneer in management training.

Mr. Abishegam has been the source of inspiration to many young people and has contributed significantly in the development of the Human Resources community.
